Relive The Epic Ramayana

Follow the footsteps of Rama & Sita by visiting the most significant sights from the Ramayana Epic in Sri Lanka.


Ramayana story is an ancient Sanskrit epic written by the well-known poet Valmiki and an important part of the Hindu canon. It consist of 07 chapters and narrates the story of Rama’s wife Sita being abducted by Rāvana the demon king of Sri Lanka.

Today Sri Lanka offers the opportunity to visit the many sites believed to have been part of the great Ramayana which include amongst others, Ravana’s fort, the Sitha Amman temple where Sitha was held and the Ritgala medicinal forest and many more.

Relive the Epic Ramayanaya : Overview

Ramayana trail tour in Sri Lanka is one of the key cultural & archeological tours in Sri Lanka. This 10-day tour covers the most important Ramayana sites in Sri Lanka including main Shiva Temples / Sita Amman Temple / Ahoka Vatika / Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple / Gayathri Peedam Nuwara Eliya / Divurumpola / Ravana Waterfall / Ravana Caves etc.

Tour Duration – 09 Nights 10 Days

Day 01


On arrival at Colombo International Airport, you will be met by our representative and will be transferred to a hotel in Negombo –  a fishing town just under 30 minute drive from the Airport.

Enjoy the comforts of your hotel and the surroundings to overcome the jetlag after a long flight.

(Option: Based on your arrival time we could avoid the Day 01 and commence the Day 02 program directly.)

Overnight stay in Negombo.

Day 02


Proceed to Kandy via Chilaw. Your first stop is at MUNNESWARAM TEMPLE in Chilaw. (Drive time – 01Hr & 30 Mnts). 

The story goes that after a victorious battle, Lord Rama left for Ayodhya in one of king Ravana’s carriages. He felt he was being followed by Bramhaasthi Dosham as he had killed King Ravana who was a Brahmin. Legend has it that when he arrived, he felt he was not being followed – later stopping the vimana and sought a remedy from Lord Shiva. Lord Rama was then blessed and was advised to build four lingams and to start praying to stop all dosham.

Next, visit MANAVARI TEMPLE. It is one of the first lingams installed & also known as Ramalinga Shivan. Thereafter proceed to Kandy and check into your hotel.

Day 03


After breakfast at the Hotel drive to Nuwara Eliya.

En-route visit SRI BHAKTA HANUMAN TEMPLE in Ramboda where Hanuman was searching for Sita Devi who was a presiding deity.

Later, visit MANI KATTUTHER – This is the rock in Labukalle Estate. Lord Hanuman met Sita Devi and on his way to announce this happy information to Lord Rama. The hill where Lord Hanuman is believed to have rested after meeting Sita Devi is known as Mani Kattuther. Today it is an open temple with statures of Lord Rama, Seta Devi, Lakshmana and Lord Hanuman stands on top of it.

In the evening visit the GAYATHRI PEEDAM which is believed to be the place from where King Ravana’s son Meghanath venerated Lord Shiva with penance and poojas and in turn was granted supernatural powers by lord Shiva.

Day 04


After breakfast set off to visit the SEETHA AMMAN TEMPLE also known as Seetha Eliya. The prominent temple architecture will not fail to attract your attention. Ancient statues of Rama and Sita can be seen on one side of the temple. This place believed to be the exact place where Sita was held captive by the demon-king Ravana.

The stream that runs from the hills catered to the needs of Sita Devi during her stay at Ashoka Vatika. It is interesting to note that footprints of Lord Hamunams are to be found by this river.

Spend the rest of your day relaxing at the hotel or travel to a tea factory and enjoy a fresh cup of Ceylonese tea by the lush green tea fields.

Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 05


After breakfast visit the DIVURUMPOLA, which is known to be the place where one takes an oath. After being liberated from King Ravana, Sita Devi was subjected to prove her chastity by offering herself to the fire. She returned unscathed and proved her holiness during this ritual.

Visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens next. This was the pleasure gardens of King Ravana where he kept the depressed Sita, insisting that she marries him. It was here where the meeting took place between her and Hanuman, who brought her Rama’s ring with the news that Rama was looking for her. He offered to carry her back, but she refused saying it would be an insult to Rama. 

Spend the rest of the day exploring the Nuwara Eliya town.

Day 06


Travel from Nuwara Eliya to Ella a drive of approximately 2 Hrs and check into your hotel. Once settled in, proceed to the Ravana Ella Falls & the Ravana Cave.

Ravana Ella Falls is a breathtaking waterfall, 1080 feet high which cascades into several falls. This has resulted in many cave formations and is said to have housed King Ravana in one of them.

The Ravana Cave tunnels prove beyond doubt the architectural brilliance of King Ravana. These tunnels served as a quick means of transport through the hills and as a secret passage networking all the important cities, airports and dairy farms. A close look at these tunnels indicates that they are man-made and not natural formations.

Overnight stay at your hotel in Ella.

Day 07


After breakfast travel from Ella to Kataragama approximately a drive of about 2 hrs and check into your hotel.


Visit the Kataragama shrine dedicated to Lord Skanda (Murugan) The God of Love and War. It is said that God Kataragama came from India, married a Jungle Girl from Sri Lanka and lived here. 


Later that afternoon visits USSANGODA, where the legend has it that after meeting Sita Devi, Lord Hunuman decided to test the strength of the mighty King Ravana and his army of Rakshasas. During the events that unfolded, Lord Hunuman’s tail was set of fire by one of the Rakshasas and in turn set fire on King Ravana’s empire.


Overnight stay at your hotel in Katharagama.

Day 08


After breakfast check out from your hotel and set off to RUMASSALA in Galle.

At various times during the war, both Lords Rama and Lakshmana were hit by powerful arrows and had fallen unconscious. Lord Hanuman had been instructed to fetch the lifesaving herbs from Himalaya to bring them back to life. He had gone to the Himalayan and lifted the whole hill as he could not identify the lifesaving herbs. Parts of the hill is said to have fallen in five places in Sri Lanka and one such place is Rumasala in Galle.

Next visit the Seenigama Temple. This is said to be the place from where Sugreeva, king of the Vanara’s (monkeys) started his onslaught on King Ravana’s forces. Thereafter proceed to Colombo.

Overnight stay in Colombo.

Day 09


After breakfast visit PANCHMUGA ANJANEVER TEMPLE dedicated to Anjaneyar. This is the only temple in the world to have chariot for Anjaneyar.


Afterwards visit Kelaniya Temple. Kelaniya is the place from where King Vibeeshana ruled after being crowned by Lakshmana. As Lord Rama was in exile for 14 years, could not take part in any coronation ceremony and deputed his younger brother Prince Lakshmana to crown Vibeeshana. Today in the very place a Buddhist shrine and a temple for king Vibeeshana exist. There are murals enshrined outside the Buddhist temple depicting the crowning of King Vibeeshana.  


Afterwards your guide would take you on a shopping spree and then back to your hotel.

Day 10


After breakfast relax and enjoy the comforts of the hotel.

Your guide will meet you on time at the lobby to drive you to the Colombo International Airport for your departing flight home.
